Zlatibor people are well known as producers of meat and meat products because this region has been predetermined to be a cattle breeding area by climate and other natural characteristics. Besides meat, milk and milk products are also produced here.
At the edge of Zlatibor in lower regions, people grow grain (wheat, barley, rye, oats, maize, buckwheat) and vegetables ( potatoes, onion…) and on the slopes and around the households plum trees are grown, among them most often old brandy sorts (ranks, madžarka, drenovka, jakljanka, šljivac…). Apples are also grown and recently more and more raspberries and blackberries.
It is quite natural that this region has brought to perfection production of those products for which the source of raw material had been provided. As far as two centuries ago Zlatibor people were the most known (and acknowledged) producers of smoked beef, pork and mutton and their products were acknowledged at the green markets in Belgrade and Sarajevo, and they often reached as far as Vienna and Budapest. Nowadays, smoked meat products are the most important article in the rich offer of Zlatibor gastronomic specialities and are immediately followed by milk products.
People of Zlatibor produce homemade plum brandy (šljivovica) from the old sort of plums.
Zlatibor green market offers a great choice of homemade products and in order to present them best to the customers, Zlatibor people organize “Pršutijada” and “Rakijada” (plum brandy manifestation) in Šljivovica village.
Zlatibor restaurants offers menues of various international cuisines and of course of dishes, characteristic for this region, such as “Zlatibor snack” (cheese, a dairy dish, ham...), “Complet Lepinja” (re-baked small flat bread filled with dairy dish, an egg and sauce of roast meat), polenta with a dairy dish, buckwheat pie, many other kinds of pies, wedding cabbage, lamb roast …
